Maida

Just shy of 13 years ago, a beautiful little grey and white baby girl was born and changed our life’s entire course. She was our first show dog, our foundation bitch, the beginning of NovaMal. Every single NovaMal dog traces back to her. She’s given us so many firsts - first big wins, first heartbreaks, first lessons in what it truly means to love, trust, and build something greater than ourselves.

She was our first show dog, and she did it with the patience of a saint. I was brand new, nervous as hell, and had no idea what I was doing, but she carried me through it all. She finished her championship in a single weekend earning the breed over specials and group placements, and her Grand Championship in the blink of an eye. Later in life, she came back out to play earning multiple Best Veteran in Show wins, including Best Veteran at the Canadian National Specialty. She even earned her Temperament Tested title - choosing, in true Maida fashion, to playbow at the intruder.

Maida made us laugh until we cried, scream in frustration, and want to pull our hair out more times than we can count. And through it all, she made us prouder than we ever thought possible.

She carried more nicknames than most dogs have toys - Goose, Grams, GrammaLamma DingDong, Guts, Grandma Guts, Rootie, Rutabaga, Tweets, Tweetie Wheatons, Maids, Daddies Girl, Skwoots… the list goes on. And behind each nickname was a dog who was steady, unwavering, and perfect in every way.

She helped pull Evan through some of his darkest times with PTSD, and helped raise every single puppy that comes through our home. We trusted her implicitly. She was, without question, the heart of our kennel.

Becoming a grandmother, and then great grandmother was one of her greatest joys (the first being eating, of course) and you could always find her laying near the box or in the puppy room, just keeping a watchful eye on the babies. She adored them, and every one of them adored her right back.

I am sad she didn’t get to meet the latest generation coming up, but I know she will be there in spirit. To all our future puppy homes: if your adorable baby decides to constantly choose to forget rules surrounding counter surfing, zooms around at random times, gets so excited and grabs any random object to parade with when you arrive home, and likes to howl all the time like they just enjoy the sound of their own voice, promise me you’ll thank Maida, for your puppy got all the best parts of her in them. Promise me you won’t shush them, because someday that silence that remains, will be deafening.

I could go on forever about what made her so special, but it would never be enough, it would never do her a justice. I take comfort in that her last day was a wonderful day. She zoomed around the yard, stopped and visited and flirted with her boys, got lovins and slept at the feet of company, had timbits, and got some snow to play in. It was as perfect a day as it could have been.

Maida, you were everything. I’ll always cherish your antics, your love, and your absolute refusal to slow down, right up until the last minute. I’m so thankful you got to enjoy your home in the woods. We will look for you everywhere. Say hi to Mavie for us. We love you endlessly.

“A chapter completed, a page turned, a life well lived, a rest well earned.”

Maida the Alaskan Malamute in Nova Scotia

Maida was our second mal. When I went up to Moonsnoe Kennel in Ontario to get Maverick, I had the pleasure of meeting all of Janis' dogs. I knew right away that our next dog would be a pup from Rosie. We waited a year before she told us she planned to breed Rosie to Cruiser. I thought, what a perfect match. The same father as Maverick, she will be like Maverick...

Boy was I wrong!!

We had pick of the litter and from the moment they were born we had eyes for "yellow girl". Janis said to wait until 6 weeks to make our choice. At 6 weeks we told her who we wanted and that we never had eyes for any other pup. She told us it was a smart choice as she was her pick too, and the breeder her mother Rosie came from (Lisa Kirkpatrick, Canamarok Malamutes) had her eyes on her as well! The special little flower everyone wanted to get their hands on, and she was all ours!

We arrived at the airport that morning, waiting to pick up Janis and our new sweet baby girl. We waited and waited and finally out came a kennel with a howling little baby screaming to get out. We let her out and just like before, love at first sight.

Maida has been less than an easy puppy. She has boundless energy, loves to tease the cats, steal toys from her friends and snipe kisses when you're not looking. She is the most talkative of the dogs and always has an opinion on things. She is incredibly social and lives for the company of other dogs. Although she has tested our patience as a young pup, she is maturing into everything we want in a brood bitch and more.
